“I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34–35, bold added for emphasis)

The challenge and the encouragement of this command is that He tells us to love one another as Jesus has loved us. This is challenging because He has loved us with an amazingly unconditional, undeniable, unrelenting, unstoppable love. His love for us is sacrificial and selfless. It always seeks to do what is best for us. It is also the key to leading people effectively.

His command to love one another as Jesus loves us is also encouraging because the bottom line is that we don’t have that type of love and never really will on our own. We need to allow the Holy Spirit to produce the fruit of love in our hearts for others as we yield control of our lives to Him.

The command to “love one another” is one that every Christian is to obey. It is repeated throughout the New Testament. John refers to it over half a dozen times (John 15:12,17; 1 John 3,23; 4:7,11–12; 2 John 1:5). Peter and Paul also remind us of this important command (Rom 13:8; 1 Pet 1:22; 4:8).

If every Christian is to love others, how much must we who hope to be ministers love others? Ministry is loving people. But what does it look like to love people?
